PMCA delighted with Narrow Water Bridge announcement

Tuesday, October, 2012

On 24 October 2012, it was announced that the application to the EU INTERREG IVA Programme for the construction of Narrow Water Bridge was successful and the project is to be funded in full (approximately €17.3m).

This is great news for the project partners – East Border Region Ltd., Louth County Council and Newry and Mourne District Council – and, as economic adviser to the team, Dr. McCloughan is delighted to have been associated with the putting-together of the detailed business plan for the project during the summer.

Narrow Water Bridge will be a project of immense significance within and beyond the island of Ireland, and one with the potential to be a ‘game-changer’ in promoting tourism and economic development in the cross-border region.

The benefits of the bridge will be the (1) opening up of the Cooley-Mournes-Gullion region to visitors, (2) reduced journey times across Carlingford Lough and (3) immediate stimulus to the local economy through the construction of the bridge.

It is expected that the bridge will be completed in 2015.
